Trump’s hearing circus implodes

From solar “doesn’t work at night” to a suspicious no-bid contract and Cash Patel’s drinking-test dare, the administration delivered another chaotic afternoon.

In this short afternoon live, I break down three moments that perfectly capture the dysfunction, absurdity, and political theater currently unfolding inside the Trump administration.

First, we look at Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s bizarre congressional exchange over clean energy. Burgum attempted to dismiss solar power by arguing that it “doesn’t work at night,” seemingly ignoring the existence of battery storage technology — a point Democrats wasted no time mocking during the hearing. The exchange quickly turned into a broader debate about energy policy, China’s role in clean energy production, and whether the administration is deliberately clinging to outdated fossil fuel narratives while the rest of the world moves forward.

Then we move to Congressman Joe Neguse’s sharp questioning over a controversial $13 million no-bid contract tied to renovations at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Neguse methodically corners Burgum over contradictions in his testimony, including his claim that he wasn’t familiar with the company that received the contract — before later acknowledging Interior’s role in hiring them. The hearing raised major questions about procurement rules, political favoritism, and whether Trump allies are benefiting from insider access.

Finally, we revisit the ongoing Kash Patel controversy after Senator Chris Van Hollen publicly released the results of his own alcohol screening test following Patel’s challenge during a heated Senate hearing. The political taunting escalates as Patel is now effectively challenged to do the same publicly.

This was a shorter live, but sometimes the most revealing political moments are also the most ridiculous.
