Trump isn’t merely angry about the Supreme Court’s mail-voting decision. He’s already building an explanation for what happens if things don’t go his way.
In a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court blocked Trump’s effort to impose new restrictions on mail-in voting ahead of the midterm elections. The ruling leaves the existing mail-voting procedures in place for the November elections.
Donald reacted exactly as you would expect. He posted a lengthy tirade on Truth Social, calling mail-in voting totally “corrupt” and a “disaster.” He said the ruling makes it easier for “Dumocrats” to cheat and accused certain Supreme Court justices of being “petrified” of Democrats.
But there was something else going on in Trump’s reaction.
In addition to expressing his rage, he used the opportunity to blame the Democrats—and now the Supreme Court—for what he is already portraying as future failures.
Trump wrote, “The damage done to America is incalculable, and they know this, just as everyone else does - It is an irreparable and unrecoverable harm!”
That’s worth paying attention to.
Because Trump isn’t just complaining about a Supreme Court decision. He is also beginning to construct the narrative for what happens if things go badly for him: the Democrats are to blame. The Supreme Court is to blame. And, presumably, anyone else who gets in his way can be added to the list.
