Republican Midterm Convention Circus Standouts

I noticed two clowns who excelled: Donald Trump and Senator Tim Scott.

Donald Trump had plenty of competition at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, but I noticed two performances that stood out.

Trump promised a $5,000 “dividend” to every adult American if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in November. He offered few details about how it would actually work, but it was certainly memorable.

Then Senator Tim Scott took the stage and, apparently deciding that Trump hadn’t quite provided enough spectacle, delivered a full-throated invocation of Jesus Christ, complete with the “King of Kings,” the “Lord of Lords,” and a quivering “AMEN.”

So, in a convention that was supposed to showcase the Republican candidates who will actually be on the ballot in November, the two moments that caught my attention were Trump promising Americans $5,000 and Tim Scott sounding like he was auditioning for a televangelist role.

I noticed something else, too: neither performance seemed particularly concerned with the voters those Senate candidates will have to persuade in November.
